The Basics:

The aim of blackjack is to beat the dealer by building a hand as close to 21 as possible (preferably the magical 21 itself), higher than the dealer’s and without going over.  If you do so, you win.

The easiest way to win is to be dealt a blackjack, that is an ace plus a card valued at 10 (which includes all face cards).

Each time you want another card you ‘hit’.

If you go over 21 in the process you ‘bust’ and lose your bet. 

If the dealer has a better hand then you, you also lose. If you tie with the dealer with a hand value of 17 or more then you get your money back in what’s called a ‘push’.

Insurance:

If the dealer shows an ace in their initial hand you can insure your bet by placing an additional sum of half your original bet value on the table. If the dealer has a blackjack you receive a payment of 2 to 1 on your insurance. In other words, you get your insurance money back plus 2X half your original bet. If the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack you lose your insurance money.

Double:

If after being dealt two cards you think you will beat the dealer with your third card, you can double your bet.

Split:

If the first two cards you’re dealt are of the same value, then you can split them into two separate hands. Keep in mind, in doing so you will have to place a bet of the same value (as your first bet) on your second hand. The game then proceeds as normal from there, with you drawing cards until you’re satisfied with your hand.

If you split aces you receive only one extra card per hand. If you receive a card value of 10 as your second card, your hand is considered a 21 and not blackjack.

10 Card Charlie:

Here’s a fun little fact. If you draw 10 cards without going bust (it is mathematically possible), you automatically win, unless of course the dealer has a blackjack.

Winnings:

• The cards are returned to the deck and shuffled after each round.


• A split hand may not be split again by the player.


• You can draw only one card if you split your aces.


• You may double after splitting.


• The dealer does not check for a blackjack.


• If you double after the dealer’s first card is revealed to be an ace, which in turn proves to be a blackjack hand, you lose both of your bets. If, however, the dealer first shows a card valued at 10 and then shows an ace for a  blackjack, you get your double back.
